Located in Watford City, ND, McKenzie County Healthcare Systems, Inc. (MCHS) consists of McKenzie County Memorial Hospital, McKenzie County Clinic, Good Shepherd Home Nursing Home, Horizon Assisted Living and Healthy Hearts Wellness Center. Their goal is to provide their rural communities with access to quality healthcare.

Business Situation

MCHS was experiencing the same staffing difficulties experienced by many other facilities nationwide, however their situation was exacerbated by the barrage of oil activity in their region which has created high paying job opportunities for all types of workers. They were faced with the situation where they did not have the expertise within the department needed for ongoing operations.  Beyond the staffing issues, they were seeing their days in accounts receivable rise. MCHS staff was busy preparing for their Healthland Classic to Centriq solution migration that was to take place in November 2013.


MCHS began looking to outsource the billing and collection component of their business office operations. They were looking for  partner that had experience with billing using the Healthland system and ultimately began a business partnership with Healthcare Resource Group (HRG) .

We were extremely pleased that HRG was not only familiar with Healthland but they were providing services to healthcare clients that were on Centriq. HRG actually helped McKenzie County Healthcare Systems with the business operations component of the Centriq build. McKenzie County Healthcare Systems found themselves consulting with HRG on best practices with the intent that in migrating to Centriq they did not want to continue with the old processes established under the Classic platform.

From October 2013 through January 2014, HRG helped McKenzie reduce their gross AR days by 30 and improve their cash collections by $1.6 million.  In January 2014, cash collections as a percent of net revenue increased from 84% to 124% . This exceeds the industry “best practices” target of 98%. HRG worked to put a denial management framework in place to help McKenzie improve on their denial rate and improve the clean claims rate. In January 2014, McKenzie contracted with HRG to add provider enrollment services.

We have found HRG to be extremely responsive to our needs and have quick resolve of our situation. HRG has standard reports that are very useful. More so though, I have requested that HRG modify reports or create additional reports to serve my needs. They have been very accommodating in this regard.
