The Forgotten Codes Are Back

The 2017 ICD-10-CM is looking a bit more like the ICD-9-CM thanks to the addition to some codes that were forgotten in the first release.

As a heavy user of external cause codes and an ED coder at heart, I was so accustomed to using the E927 series that when ICD-10-CM came out I felt lost and forgotten.

They may have forgotten the highly used code series; but fear not, they remembered them this year.

Below are the added codes for use when overexertion is the external cause:

  • X50.0XX
    • Overexertion from strenuous movement or load, initial encounter
  • X50.0XXD
    • Overexertion from strenuous movement or load, subsequent encounter
  • X50.0XXS
    • Overexertion from strenuous movement or load, sequela
  • X50.1XXA
    • Overexertion from prolonged static or awkward postures, initial encounter
  • X50.1XXD
    • Overexertion from prolonged static or awkward postures, subsequent encounter
  • X50.1XXS
    • Overexertion from prolonged static or awkward postures, sequela
  • X50.3XXA
    • Overexertion from repetitive movements, initial encounter
  • X50.3XXD
    • Overexertion from repetitive movements, subsequent encounter
  • X50.3XXS
    • Overexertion from repetitive movements, sequela
  • X50.9XXA
    • Other and unspecified overexertion or strenuous movements or postures, initial encounter
  • X50.9XXD
    • Other and unspecified overexertion or strenuous movements or postures, subsequent encounter
  • X50.9XXS
    • Other and unspecified overexertion or strenuous movements or postures, sequela

This forgetting of codes didn’t just affect the external cause codes, it affected surgery coding too.  Remember the ICD-9-CM for conversion from a laparoscopic, thorascopic or arthroscopic surgery to an open?  It was left off in the first release of the ICD-10-CM but alas the authors did right this year by adding them back.

The new ICD-10-CM codes are:

  • Z53.31
    • Laparoscopic surgical procedure converted to open procedure
  • Z53.32
    • Thoracoscopic surgical procedure converted to open procedure
  • Z53.33
    • Arthroscopic surgical procedure converted to open procedure
  • Z53.39
    • Other specified procedure converted to open procedure

Of course, there are many more new codes this year, but these “oldies but goodies” codes just had to be pointed out.
